Imagine A Great Election 2009: Gubernatorial Races in Virginia and New Jersey
October 28, 2009
We watch the polling numbers posted on Rasmussenreports.com carefully due to the site’s extensive polling process and past accuracy in predicting election results across the country. According to Rasmussen, a new Republican governor may be elected next week in Virginia, while the gubernatorial race in New Jersey is too close to call.
Virginia As of this morning, Rasmussen states that Virginia Republican Robert McDonnell is ahead of Democrat R. Creigh Deeds by 13 percentage points (54%-41%), with only four percent (4%) of the state’s voters undecided.
Immediately following a campaign stop for Deeds by President Obama in Norfolk yesterday, support for the Democratic candidate was further shaken: 39% of voters said the president’s effort makes them less likely to vote for Deeds; only 24% said it makes them more likely to vote for the Democrat; and 36% of voters said Obama’s appearance will have no impact on their decision.
New Jersey In New Jersey, Rasmussen polls conducted earlier this week put incumbent Democratic Governor Jon Corzine only three points behind Republican Chris Christie. A third candidate, independent Chris Daggett, has lost support in recent weeks. Regardless of the outcome of this race, negative feelings about the two main candidates run high in the state. While incumbent Corzine is viewed unfavorably by more than half (57%) of his constituents, Christie is viewed unfavorably by nearly the entire other half (49%).
